2024 Piano Star Competition
Grand Finalist Selection Methodology

How Grand Finalists Are Selected

At the Piano Star Competition, grand finalists are selected based on their percentile rank within their group and location. Before the competition application deadline, a set number of grand finalists is allocated for each group across all locations (e.g., 12 for Group A). Contestants ranked within this quota are admitted as grand finalists, provided they meet the minimum PL Star Score threshold. If there is a tie at the cutoff rank, all tied contestants are admitted.

PL Star Score

The PL Star Score is calculated by rounding each contestant’s raw score to one decimal place. These scores form the foundation for calculating percentile rankings for contestants within their respective groups and locations.

Minimum Score Threshold
To qualify as a grand finalist, contestants must meet a minimum PL Star Score threshold of 8.5. This approach guarantees that all selected finalists meet the expected standard of performance, regardless of their relative ranking.

How It’s Used

  1. Averaged scores from judges are rounded to one decimal place to create the PL Star Score.
  2. Percentile rankings are calculated based on the PL Star Scores within each group and location.
  3. Contestants who do not meet the minimum PL Star Score threshold are ineligible to become grand finalists.

How Percentile Rankings Are Calculated

Percentile ranking evaluates contestants relative to their peers within the same group and location. This method accounts for differences in group sizes and judging styles to create a level playing field. The formula we use is:

Handling Ties

The “Number of Tied Scores” accounts for all contestants with the same score as the current contestant being ranked. The formula ensures that tied contestants are treated equally by assigning them the same percentile rank based on their highest possible position within the ranking.

No-Tie Situations

In cases where there are no tied scores, the formula simplifies to:

Example Table

Below is an example calculation for a group of contestants:

ContestantScoreRankPercentile Rank
Contestant A9.61100%
Contestant B9.61100%
Contestant C9.4375%
Contestant D9.4375%
Contestant E9.2550%
Contestant F9.2550%
Contestant G9.1725%
Contestant H9.0813%
Contestant I8.490%

  • Tied scores (Contestants A and B) share the top rank and receive 100%.
  • Contestants with the same score (Contestants C and D) are fairly ranked together with 75%.
  • The lowest score (Contestant I) always receives 0%.
