163 Finalists Announced at the 2020 Piano League Piano Star International Competition

After a week of intense judging at the Preliminary Round of the 2020 Piano League Piano Star International Competition, the result is finally out! 
First, a reminder of the prize rules for the Preliminary Round:
• 1st prize certificate: Star Score 9.0-10.0
• 2nd prize certificate: Star Score 8.0-8.9
• 3rd prize certificate: Star Score 7.0-7.9
• Honorable Mention certificate: Star Score 6.5-6.9

ALL first-prize winners and some second-prize winners, if spaces allow, were selected to the final round of the competition. 

The level of competition was extremely high, and it’s a testament to how attractive the competition was to young talents around the world. In the end, 163 contestants from 11 countries and/or regions successfully advanced made it to the finals. 


What’s Next

The Final Round will be held on November 21-22 by means of online video conferences. In the end, the top four in each group (the top two in each region) will make it to the Winners Showcase, the Grand Final of the competition. 


In other words, out of the 163 finalists, only 32 (4×8 age groups) will make it to the Winners Showcase, and put on two fantastic shows (1 for the professional division, 1 for the amateur division) for the world that you won’t want to miss. 


Before we reveal the finalists, here are some fun facts from the Preliminary Round:

  • Youngest applicant in the amateur division: 5 years old.
  • Youngest finalist in the amateur division: 5 years old.
  • Youngest applicant in the professional division: 6 years old.
  • Youngest finalist in the professional division: 7 years old.
  • Most played composer in the preliminary round: Frederic Chopin
  • Highest PL Star Score in amateur division: 10 
  • Highest PL Star Score in the professional division: 9.6

The Final Round contestants will also have a harder path for the top prizes. In the Preliminary Round, the prizes were given to pianists who scored a 7.0 and above. The rules are as follows:

  • 1st prize certificate: PL Star Score 9.0-10.0
  • 2nd prize certificate: PL Star Score 8.5-8.9
  • 3rd prize certificate: PL Star Score 8.0-8.4

There will be no Honorable Mention prizes for this round.
