Chopin International Competition: 23 Pianists Advance to the Third Round

After 4 full days of second round performances in the 18th Chopin International Piano Competition Warsaw, the results of the second round of the competition were announced just a short while ago. 23 pianists will advance to the third round of the competition.

The second round of the competition started on Saturday, Oct 9th, and finished today. Jed Distler from the Gramaphone mentioned in a review that online viewers complained about pieces being played over and over again in the first round, and the second round was no different. The choice of repertoire during the second round was, actually, even more limited than the first: each contestant was asked to play three pieces: First, choose 1 between only 5 Waltzes. Then, choose from one of the ballades, one of the 4 scherzos, the Barcarolle, Fantasy in F minor, or Polonaise-Fantasy in A flat major, Op. 61, and finally, choose between one of only three polonaises, or play the two Op. 26 polonaises back to back.

In the end, 44 pianists performed in the second round. Marcin Wieczorek from Poland withdrew from the competition due to health reasons.
